Archaeology Above & Below Conference 2014
This year's archaeology conference, 4th-6th April 2014, will focus on mobilising communities to embark on projects that can uncover, analyse, and showcase the plethora of monuments that dot the Irish and European landscape. The essence of this gathering is to promote citizen archaeology, and our talks and workshops have been designed to complement this.
The conference will begin with a one-day invited seminar hosted in Balla Secondary School, Co Mayo.
Topics include Remote Sensing Techniques; LiDAR, Ground Geophysics. Kite Aerial Photography will be discussed, while features include a Careers Session, and a Poster Competition for local national schools.
Also included will be the Mayo launch of the Discovery Programme’s travelling exhibition ‘Traces of the Past’, hosted by the Tóchar Valley Rural Community Network, and sponsored by the Western Care Association.
The weekend's proceedings will be hosted in Tulsk, Co. Roscommon, by the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre and the Tulsk Inn and sponsored by ArchaeoLandscapes Europe.
There will be presentations on the use of Field-walking, LiDAR, Kite Aerial Photography, Geophysics, and Experimental Archaeology for community projects. There is a broad range in formats, including talks, posters, workshops and practical demonstrations.
Presenters have drawn from Community Groups and Institutions based in Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland will share their expertise and experience with Irish local and national Community Groups who are interested in History and Community Archaeology.
