Marie Monaghan, Padraic Kilduff & Fiona McGuire,
Moore History Group
Testimony to the Past: Archaeology, Gravestones and Genealogy
Moore History Group was founded in 2014 by Marie Costello Monaghan, Padraic Kilduff and Maureen Duffy for all interested in the history and genealogy and archaeology of the environs of Moore Parish and since then there have been regular meetings in Moore Hall. The group has organised walking tours, read, recorded and uploaded the information at www.historicgraves.ie; the memorials in the parish’s three historic graveyards, Moore South, Clonburren and Kilbegley. To further genealogical study, map boards of the graves are erected in Clonburren and Moore South, with Kilbegley to be finalised later in the year. The group has engaged with the various non-invasive methods of headstone recording including photogrammetry. Genealogical research includes replying to queries on the Ireland Reaching Out website. Other activities have included the premiere production of, “Mather’s of Falty” by Xandra Kilduff MA, and there-enactment of Mather’s cattle drives in Falty, Moore, as part of the Roscommon 1916 celebrations. At present we are liaising with local school children and residents in recording field names and adding the information to the Meitheal Logainm community place-name website.
Fiona Maguire, Marie Costello Monaghan, and Padraic Kilduff will discuss aspects of the archaeology, history and genealogy associated with the historical graveyards in the parish. Fiona will address the religious settlement of Moore South from an archaeological perspective with reference to the local area and its place within the wider landscape of medieval monuments and its location close to the great routeways of early Ireland; the Shannon and the Slí Mhór. Marie and Padraic will focus on the work of the group; the recording and genealogical research involved in the parish graveyards and its importance for those dedicated to the discovery of their ancestors. In conjunction with this work they will also focus on the other activities of the group and how this illuminates the social fabric of a rural community.
