Brian Callaghan, Moybologue Historical Society

Moybologue Graveyard: Below and Beyond
Brian Callaghan is from Bailieboro, Co. Cavan, and is a founding member and current secretary of Moybologue Historical Society. Brian is a graduate of Maynooth University (B.A., 2004) and Trinity College Dublin (MPhil, 2006) and is also a member of the Breifne Historical Society, Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, 18th Century Ireland Society and the Royal Society of Antiquaries in Ireland. Brian's research interests are local medieval and ecclesiastical history and archaeology, the Sheridan family of Quilca House, Co. Cavan and family history and genealogy.

Moybologue Historical Society was founded in March 2012 and is a voluntary community group concerned with preserving and promoting the history and heritage of the Moybologue complex and surrounding areas. The Moybologue complex lies along the Cavan-Meath border, in the present Roman Catholic parish of Kilmainhamwood and Moybologue, approx. 7 miles south of Bailieboro, Co. Cavan and 20 miles NW of Kells, Co. Meath. The complex comprises an ancient enclosed graveyard, containing the ruins of a late medieval church and later transept or priest's residence. A late 12th century Anglo-Norman Motte and Bailey lies in the adjoining field. The history and folklore of the site has been well documented by Phillip O'Connell (Breifny Antiq. Hist. Soc. J, 1924, & Diocese of Kilmore, 1937) and the archaeological features by Oliver Davies (JRSAI, Dec 1948). The principal extant features of the site and surrounding areas are also listed in the Archaeological Inventory of Co. Cavan. The trigger for re-visiting and investigating Moybologue is the production of a Conservation and Management plan for the graveyard in January 2013 by Cavan County Council as an action of Cavan County Heritage Plan, coupled with the realisation that no significant examination of the site has taken place in almost 70 years.
