Doon Fort Island Fortress - Secrets of the Jewel in Donegal's Crown
Constructed of drystone walling, Doon Fort is situated on Loughadoon, Co. Donegal. It is believed to have been the royal residence of the O’Boyle Chieftains. Its high, thick stone walls see the fort classified as a Western Stone Fort. In response to the decline of the structure due to environmental factors, Ardara GAP Heritage and History Group was established in order to work towards preventing further decline and highlighting the significance of the structure.
Led by archaeologist Paula Harvey, the group were successful in applying for the Adopt a Monument Scheme to further their aim in preserving the monument for further generations. Through the Adopt a Monument Scheme communities are provided with expert support and advice to assist the conservation and protection of a local monument.
