Gallows Hill, Co Waterford, Adopt a Monument and Geophysical Survey Results 2016
In 2015 the first geophysical survey of a Gallows Hill in Dungarvan was completed by Waterford County Museum/Gallows Hill Community Group. The mound is enclosed by several housing developments and is speculated to be an Anglo Norman Mote. The group were one of five sites in Ireland selected by the Heritage Council for a pilot ‘Adopt a Monument Project’ in March 2016. The Adopt a Monument experience has had a positive impact on the project and the volunteers have had a very busy year with geophysical surveys, medieval fair and many new discoveries along the way. In August 2016 the group completed an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey of the mound. The results of the surveys will direct the next stage of the volunteers exciting discovery of the sites origins. The community group look forward to an exciting year in 2017 that will continue support the understanding and conservation of Gallows Hill.
Group member’s Christina Knight, William Whelan and Sarah Lucas are looking forward to returning to Rathcroghan to present the results of the 2016 surveys and their experience with the Heritage Council’s ‘Adopt a Monument’ project.
