The excavation of a multiperiod site at Shankill
The archaeological works for the new N5 route between Ballaghaderreen and Scramoge in North Roscommon are currently underway. As part of those works, the crossroads at Shankill will be upgraded. This is adjacent the site of a graveyard and earlier ecclesiastical site, that was reputedly founded by St Patrick in 434 AD. The excavation has revealed an exciting array of multiperiod remains dating from the Neolithic to recent past, but most of which appears to relate to the medieval ecclesiastical foundation. Post excavation analyses are ongoing, and this talk will outline the preliminary results.
