Justin Kenny: Kilberry Amenity & Heritage Group, Co. Meath

Picture

Kilberry Amenity & Heritage Group: Further community surveys - "The ringfort" concludes a trilogy of events.
Justin Kenny's talk is concerned with the archaeological investigations that took place on the back of local claims, statements and folklore.  Justin's talk will showcase what can happen when a community group sets it sights on learning more about the landscape they inhabit.
Our continued investigation of the local sites using electrical resistance tomography and other techniques has ensured this group of volunteers remained active over the year.

Kilberry Amenity and Heritage group's biggest task to date, a colossal Ringfort, 61m in diameter, that was the next obvious choice.
This coupled with the continuing work on the  previously presented souterrain and Bronze Age mound, brings the trilogy of monuments to the fore. We focused our main efforts on this distinctive structure that lies on high ground and a known landmark that has captured the imagination of the community for centuries. We used many different geophysical techniques, covering over 6 thousand square meters. That now ponders the question it really a ring fort?
