Rathcroghan Conference 2018 - Archaeology Above & Below
Programme of Contributions
The programme of contributors at Archaeology Above & Below 2018, 14th & 15th April, espouses the spirit of community archaeology, as we look at projects and activities at very different stages of development, and incorporate a wide range of techniques and procedures, all with one goal in mind: to understand more about the landscapes we inhabit.
The sessions are divided thematically, with focused sessions on Graveyard Studies, Adopt A Monument Projects, Late Prehistoric & Early Historic Ireland as well as individual case-studies on particular environments both in Ireland and further afield.
We are delighted to welcome Prof. Elizabeth FitzPatrick, an expert in Medieval Gaelic Ireland and Lecturer in the Dept. of Archaeology, National University of Ireland, Galway, to provide what will be an engrossing Keynote Lecture, entitled:
'Gaelic Service Families of Machaire Chonnacht and the Landscape of Fraoch', to round off the proceedings on a very busy first day of the conference.
We finish the weekend with a unique field-trip to the multi-period remains of Ard Caoin, focusing particularly on the impressive earthen remains of Dumha Selga, Carn Láma and Carnfree, where we will put some of the previous day's information to bear on this fascinating landscape, and its deep associations with the O'Conor dynasts of Machaire Connacht.
