Place-names and Cultural Landscape History
This presentation will provide an introduction to the study of place-names and their use in linguistic and archaeological research, focusing in particular on Roscommon place-names and their relevance today in interpreting and exploring the cultural landscape of Ireland. Data from recent research on place-names in Roscommon will be presented, and the importance of this data in rebuilding a sense of the historic landscape of the county will be demonstrated. The presentation will conclude with a summary of some useful and accessible resources which can prove invaluable in the study of the origins of our townland names.
