Adopt a Monument Case Study
Members of the Round Hill Project will present a case study on the progress of the Round Hill project for the past two years. The motte and bailey castle, hidden on tree-covered Round Hill, is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century by the Anglo-Normans. The successful application to the Adopt a Monument Scheme has facilitated the investigation of the site to assist with a conservation and management plan for a possible tourism development. In 2016 and 2017, topographical and geophysical surveys were completed, involving community-based volunteers, revealing the extent of Round Hill and issues concerning conservation and access.
Mealla Fahey will present on the origins of the Lismore Heritage Company and their involvement with the Heritage Council’s Adopt a Monument Scheme. Lismore Heritage Company was founded in 1991 to promote the wealth of culture and heritage present in Lismore and its surrounding landscape.
This will be followed by an overview by Simon Dowling and Kevin Barton on the topography, photogrammetry and geophysical surveys carried out over the past two years. Kevin O’Callaghan, from GMIT Mayo Campus will then present the geology, geo-hazards and the risk assessment conducted on the site. To conclude the case study, Mealla Fahey will deliver the future plans for the Round Hill Project.
